Hanger Extenders – In The Hoop

Have you searched for just the right hanger to hold your doll outfits? One that holds a dress, or maybe a top and pants? And then, what about the shoes or other accessories?

I’ve come up with a way to hang a whole outfit – tops, skirts, shoes, and accessories – all on one hanger! All you need is a standard American Girl-style hanger, a 6-inch craft stick, and an embroidery machine with a 5×7 hoop, to make these awesome hanger extenders.

There are two styles. The first one works with the AG hanger that has a bar across the bottom. The bar gives the extender the stability and structure for hanging the extender. The second style works with the older style hangers that have a heart through the middle, but no bar on the bottom. This one hangs off the top of the hanger. It has to be a little bit shorter to fit over the hanger, and then into the 5×7 hoop, so it doesn’t have quite as much vertical space available for hanging things from.

Here’s a picture of the Style 1 hanger extender:

The extender hangs off the bottom bar of the AG-style hanger. This particular bag has a zipper bag attached to the extender via a Velcro strip attached to the extender and the back of the zipper bag.

You can hang pants or a skirt from the bottom of the extender because there is a 6″ craft stick on the bottom, giving the extender its stability:

Style 2 has the same craft stick at the bottom, but the extender hangs over the top of a hanger. You can use an AG heart-style hanger, or cut off a tubular hanger with this extender:

With both hangers, you can either hang a zipper bag with a Velcro strip, or you can create a little internal pocket for holding small things, like glasses, a folding fan, or something else that goes with an outfit.

This pattern is now available on Pixie Faire in two formats! You can purchase the machine embroidery pattern and make the extenders as seen here. If you don’t have an embroidery machine, however, you can purchase the equivalent sewing machine pattern and make it by machine. The sewing machine version even comes with SVG and FCM files so that you can use your electronic cutting machine to cut the fabric out!
